Because it was his birthday a few days ago, I am paying tribute to a great family friend who is like a son to me and a brother to my children.
There exists a multitude of living heroes within the ranks of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and I have been fortunate to develop close friendships with the bravest of them all. Among these remarkable individuals is Captain Matt Biñas, a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 2014. Within our family, we affectionately call him “Matt Matt.”
I had the privilege of meeting Matt, a young Second Lieutenant, in December 2014 in Sulu. Despite his recent graduation from the PMA, he had already achieved remarkable feats that surpass the accomplishments of many seasoned soldiers over the span of their entire military careers. While his youth may have made him appear inexperienced, Matt’s achievements spoke volumes about his exceptional abilities and dedication.
On November 14, 2014, just a month before we met, 2LT Biñas’ name was already inscribed in the Philippine Army’s chronicles of heroism for his bravery.
Amid a fierce battle against the Abu Sayyaf troops in Talipao, Sulu, 2LT Biñas swiftly responded to the order of his company commander, 1LT Michael Asistores, who was wounded and earlier extricated from the encounter area at the time, to reinforce the engaged platoon led by 1LT Dante Espiritu. Accompanied by his Team Sergeant, 2LT Biñas fearlessly crawled toward the rear, determined to provide cover fire for the extraction of their wounded comrades.
Anticipating the possibility of enemy reinforcements, 2LT Biñas skillfully positioned his platoon to face the northwest, prepared to confront any incoming threats head-on. Even amid the ongoing operation to extract their wounded comrades, the enemy remained relentless in their pursuit to seize one of the fallen soldiers. However, their plan was thwarted by the sheer force of 2LT Biñas’ platoon, supported by the continuous barrage of rockets and machine gun fire from the Philippine Air Force’s MG250 helicopters.
Under the direction of 1LT Espiritu, 2LT Biñas launched a brave assault on the enemy position, which was around fifty meters away. In a fierce running gun battle, he and his men supported one another, engaging in a relentless fight against the enemy. Their heroic efforts allowed them to recover the fallen soldiers’ bodies from the site of the encounter.
2LT Biñas’ actions in that battle in Talipao exemplify true heroism and selflessness. His quick response, strategic thinking, and unshakable tenacity under heavy enemy fire were crucial in protecting his fellow soldiers and fulfilling their mission objectives.
When I asked about the number of gold crosses he has so far received, he replied with a lighthearted remark: “I can’t say for sure, but I believe it’s more than one. I haven’t really checked.” This simple response shows his humble nature and genuine dedication as a soldier. He truly is a shining example of the Philippine Army’s bravery and dedication in defending our nation.
Happy birthday, our dearest Matt Matt! (INSITES by: JOJI CODILLA)
